As part of my proposition and theorization of Food Design Thinking, the branch of Design Thinking that is specific to food, I have released four new methods for food creativity: one method for food context exploration (StarChat), and three methods for idea generation (IdeaHive, IdeaMarket, IdeaShake). The four methods are all cards games that trigger reflection, discussion, and creativity by creating a shared playful activity and lively discussion, the two favorite ingredients for creativity.
The four methods, and related cards sets, are available in the form of books which include detailed instructions and theoretical background, and from which the cards themselves can be cut and used. All books are available on Amazon.
IdeaHive is a cards game/creativity tool that is specific to food projects. The cards trigger metaphorical thinking and creativity by image association and combination. By using the method described in this book, you will generate a multitude of Food Design ideas, whether you want to design (or redesign) a dish, a simple dinner between friends, a restaurant, a cafe, a food truck, a food event, a bakery, or any other food service or food system. IdeaHive pushes you to design for all aspects of the eating experience: the food itself, the vessel, the eating space, and the interaction between person and companion, service staff, and others around.
This method, as opposed to IdeaHive and IdeaShake, is better indicated for projects that focus on, or include, an edible component. By using IdeaMarket you will generate a multitude of Food Design ideas, whether you want to design (or redesign) a dish, a new pastry, a simple dinner between friends, a food event. IdeaHive pushes you to design for all aspects of the eating experience.
IdeaShake is a cards game/creativity tool that is specific to food projects. The cards game uses roleplay, and fun action based tasks, to trigger creativity. IdeaShake, because of the trigger cards you’ll find inside, pushes you to design not only solutions that respond to people’s values, but also to propose solutions that respond to all aspects of sustainability.
StarChat is a Food Design Thinking method that helps you learn about your Food Design context from the perspective of people who live it. StarChat is a method to guide a group discussion with a technique that triggers metaphorical thinking, the associative thinking that defines how we learn. Whether you are interested in creating new dishes, designing or redesigning a restaurant, cafe, food truck, or any food service, whether you are interested in food events, food systems, or sustainable Food Design, you will, in one form or another, use a Food Design process.
